  1. Somebody or something greatly admired or loved, often to excess.
  2. A thing that is forbidden to make or to worship (give homage to) for both Jews and christians. See Exodus 20 ("the Ten Commandments") ex. Making or Saluting a flag. Sentence: The christians debated the wording of the flag salute, although their scripture forbids creating an object then paying homage to it.
